Use Samsung DeX without a monitor — on your MacBook
You don't need a monitor, HDMI adapter or dock for Samsung DeX. A Galaxy on One UI 8 or later can run DeX on a virtual display, and your MacBook shows it in a window on its own screen — over one USB-C cable or Wi-Fi. Deskbridge opens it automatically when you plug in.
Why people want this
- Travel light. Hotel desks, trains and coffee shops rarely come with a spare monitor. Your laptop already has a great screen.
- One device's apps, another's keyboard. Reply in your phone's apps — Messages, WhatsApp, banking, work apps that only exist on Android — with a real keyboard and trackpad.
- Fewer cables. The cable you charge with is the only one you need, and it keeps the phone topped up while you work.
How it works
Android can create screens that exist only in software, called virtual displays. Since One UI 8, Galaxy phones start the full DeX desktop on a new virtual display. A Mac app streams that display into a window and sends your keyboard and trackpad back — so it's Samsung's real DeX, not a mirror of your phone. (The full story: Samsung DeX on a Mac in 2026.)
Set it up in five minutes
- Check your phone has One UI 8 or later: Settings › About phone › Software information. (Which phones qualify?)
- Turn on USB debugging: tap Build number seven times, then Developer options › USB debugging.
- Download Deskbridge and open it — it lives in your menu bar.
- Plug the phone into the MacBook and tap Allow on the phone. DeX opens in a window.
Make it comfortable on a laptop screen
- Size: Deskbridge matches your MacBook's display by default, so text is Retina-sharp. Prefer bigger text? Choose Text Size › Larger.
- Portrait: for chat and reading, switch to portrait (⌥⌘R). Apps get a phone-style single column instead of cramped tablet panes.
- Full screen: press ⌘F in the DeX window to give it a whole Space, then swipe between DeX and your Mac apps.
- Dark phone: turn on Blackout so the phone's own screen goes black on the table while DeX keeps running — see Secure Blackout.
Monitor vs. MacBook window
| DeX on a monitor | DeX in a MacBook window | |
|---|---|---|
| Extra hardware | Monitor + USB-C/HDMI + keyboard + mouse | One cable (or none, over Wi-Fi) |
| Use your Mac at the same time | Separate setup | Side by side, drag files across |
| Clipboard with your computer | No | Copy and paste both ways |
| Portable | No | Yes |
Going wireless
In Deskbridge choose Connect Wirelessly…, then on your phone open Developer options › Wireless debugging and pair with the code it shows. A cable gives the smoothest picture and charges the phone; Wi-Fi is great for a cable-free desk.
FAQ
Can I use Samsung DeX without a monitor?
Yes. With a Galaxy on One UI 8 or later, DeX can run on a virtual display that your MacBook shows in a window — no monitor, HDMI adapter or dock needed.
What cable do I need?
Any data-capable USB-C cable between the phone and the Mac. Charge-only cables won't work. You can also connect over Wi-Fi.
Does my phone charge while connected?
Yes, over USB the Mac charges the phone while DeX runs.
Will it drain my phone battery over Wi-Fi?
DeX keeps the phone awake, so over Wi-Fi it uses battery like any active screen session. Use the cable for long sessions.
